At 07:26 Kuhl Hose Brush 689 and Tanker 686 were sent to assist Brookside behind Penn State Behrend in Winter Green Gorge for a large woods fire. Crews from Brookside arrived on scene and found a large area of woods on fire well off road accessible only by an off road trail. Access to the trail was made by cutting 3 trees. Crews quickly contained the cover fire but had difficulty extinguishing the fire. Crews battled thick brush, leaves, and branches on the forest floor which held some fire under the ground and crews needed to overhaul the approximately 2 1/2 acre area that had burned. Extra manpower was called to overhaul the large area. Crews remained on the scene until just after 11. The fire appears to be caused by carelessly unattended camp fire.
