Shortly after
2 p.m. Erie Fire Department units was dispatched to the
700 E. 18th St. for a
structure fire. The first alarm assignment was Deputy Chief 323,
Engines 13, 8, 3, 6 and Tower Ladder 2. The initial report was a 2
1/2 story wood frame residence with heavy smoke reported from
several companies while responding. Engine 13 was the first
arriving unit and confirmed a working fire in a 2 1/2 story wood
frame residence.
Deputy Chief 323 requested
a 5th Engine, Engine 12 was added to the assignment. Along with
Engine 12, Deputy Chief 327, Assistant Chief 325, Fire Inspectors
326 and FI-2, and EMS 39.
Initial operations were
offensive, and as the fire extended and the building became unsafe,
a move to defensive operations was made by 323. The evacuation
notice was given via the radio and all companies were instructed to
sound their air horns. Initial accountability report was all
accounted for but 1 FF from Engine #6. After a short time the
firefighter was located.
Crews used (3) 4" LDH supply
lines, (6) 1 ¾” & (1) 2 ½” hand lines. Engine 13 & 8 used their
deck guns and TL2 used a portable monitor.
Low water pressure and adverse
weather conditions played a factor in fighting the fire.
Belle
Valley and West Lake
volunteers were placed on stand by and an off-duty recall was
initiated to cover the city.
The fire is under investigation.
