Who
was Heinz Schulz?
Heinz was born in Passau, Germany on October 25, 1945, son of the late Walter and Maria Schulz. Heinz at a young age joined the West German Army. He came to the US in 1970 and attended helicopter pilot school at Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells, Texas. Heinz returned to Germany to finish his obligation to the army then returned to the u.s. in 1975. Heinz’ extensive career as a helicopter pilot began as an Aerial Patrol in Ohio for more than seven years, where he flew power line patrol. In 1985, Heinz went to work for Shands Care in Gainesville, Florida as an EMS pilot. He found his niche in life and soon moved to Erie, Pa., to join the Life Star Family. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Electronics, and graduated with honors in 1984. He also became a US citizen in 1984. Heinz enjoyed classical music, cross-country, down hill skiing, long distance cycling and hiking with his wife. Heinz is survived by his wife linda, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. Today Friends, family, coworkers and respected members of the emergency service community gathered at Mercyhurst College D'Angelo Performing arts center to celebrate the life of Heinz. The service began with the presentation of the colors by the Pittsburgh EMS honor guard. After an opening prayer, several guests and friends gave accounts of Heinz and their life experiences. Dave Leicht, paramedic and long time friend was the spokesman for the entire flight team. He shared personal and flight team member stories. Reverend Harry Johns, III gave a brief synopsis of Heinz life and talked about the difference and impact he had on the world A slide show remembering the life of Heinz brought tears to most eyes and was followed by a moment of silence. Those in attendance then went outdoors as bagpipes played amazing grace 4 helicopters flew over as one last tribute to Heinz. After the ceremony there was a small reception in the lobby of the arts center which included German beer and food. memorial slide show (you will need windows media player)
